OK, if you go to My Computer, left click on the encrypted drive and go to Manage Bitlocker you should then have the option to Back Up your recovery key.

Hi guys,

I have a user that this has happened to twice. The computer states that it needs the recovery key because something has changed. I know for a fact that this user isn't changing anything. Any thoughts on this? Maybe try decryption and re-encrypting?

after you put in the recover key you need to

  • suspend bitlocker
  • reboot
  • make sure bitlocker resumes
  • reboot again to see if it asks for the key again

I have also seen this. I can be caused by a few things. such as

  • hardware changes (I have seen docking stations cause this if a machine is booted while attached)
  • malware
  • windows updates (unusual)
  • anything that effects the windows startup routine and causes the hash to be changed and not match what bitlocker expects

1.Open command prompt and Administrator

2.Type Manage-bde-protectors -delete C: -type TPM

3.TypeManage-bde -protectors -add C: -tpm

Now to test it hasresolved the issue you have to do this in this specific order.

1.Shutdownthe laptop.

Do not use the restart option. /free-download-microsoft-office-2013-key-generator.html.

2.Once the laptop is off then turn it on

You should not getany prompt for the bitlocker key.

I use Bitlocker to encrypt the drives on my Win8/10 machines and want to backup the recovery keys to AD. I have the GPO enabled and the servers have Bitlocker enabled with the Recovery Key Viewer installed, but after running 'manage-bde -protectors -adbackup -id {xxx}' and getting the message that the key is backed up to AD I still can't see it within AD on the Bitlocker Recovery tab.

I'm running Server 2016 with domain/forest level set to Server 2016 so my understanding is that the schema should already be able to accept the recovery key. In fact if I use ADSI edit and look at the schema I can see the required fields.

Bitlocker Recovery Key Windows 10

I've also delegated read access to the msFVE-RecoveryInformation object for myself, but still can't see the recovery key when using the RSAT tools.

Has anyone else come across this with Server 2016, or have any suggestions what I should be checking?

This was bugging me so I've been back and taken another look at it and now have it working.

First thing make sure that you your GPO setup to save the recovery key to AD DS. Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Bitlocker Drive Encryption>Operating System Drives>Choose how Bitlocker-protected operating system drives can be recovered, make sure this is set to enabled. You can then use the defaults, although I also ticked 'Do not enable Bitlocker until recovery information is stored..etc'.

Now for the bit I did different to my original post. From a domain admin account open powershell and use;

PS C:> $BLV = Get-BitLockerVolume -MountPoint 'C:'
PS C:> Backup-BitLockerKeyProtector -MountPoint 'C:' -KeyProtectorId $BLV.KeyProtector[1].KeyProtectorId

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj649839(v=wps.630).aspx

If you now look at the computer object within AD you should see the recovery key. Don't forget to refresh if you've left it open.

The next step for me will be to put this into a script that can be used during login to backup the recovery keys for those laptops I've already encrypted.
